Making History Visible: Of American Myths and National Heroes

Princeton University Art Museum
Hours: Thursday: 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sunday: 12 – 5 p.m.

Presented on the occasion of the Princeton and Slavery Project, this installation examines the complex ways in which American artists have confronted American history and identity, and in particular the ways in which artists represent and shape ideas of African American identity as well as the history and legacy of slavery in the United States. Presence and absence—what is depicted and what is not—figure strongly here in the work of such wide-ranging artists as Titus Kaphar, Thomas Hart Benton, Elizabeth Catlett, Glenn Ligon, Sally Mann, Faith Ringgold, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, and Charles White.
